I went not too far overseas in college, to a rural part of Quebec to study French, but my advice is if the opportunity is there seize it. Experience this different society, practice the language, have an enjoyable experience. Opportunities to study overseas don't come up every time you turn around, so if you're able partake. College my understanding is the sophomore year is the best opportunity for this, as junior & senior years you'll be concentrating on your major courses & working with career services in areas like interview techniques. Hope you go & enjoy your trip.

Hey there,

I totally agree: if the chance is there, go for it! I'm styding French and Spanish in college, and last summer I spent two weeks in Montpellier in Southern France, where I stayed with a host family - it was amazing! This summer three friends and I are going to Paris for two months (this will be my first time staying from home for longer than 2 weeks at a time), to do volunteer work and just speak French.

I went to Barcelona in my 3rd year of high school and it was an amazing experience, even though I was a bit worried beforehand, I'm so glad I went. My moto is 'you never now until you try!'

Chris, I have the same motto, If an oportunity comes, just take it, no matter the outcome, good or bad, at least you've tried it. I'm also learning French, but the grammar is really getting to me. Do you know of any good textbooks for learning it? I'm using "french with ease: the day by day method" but it is very tedious and not very educational.

I think the only way to truly learn a language is by continuous exposure. Is your class trip going to involve classes in French at the school? All I can advise, based on experience, is continuing courses in the language and as much exposure to it as possible. The more years you study it, pretty soon you'll find yourself thinking in it as well as speaking, reading, understanding it. Bonne chance et bon voyage!

I study french outside of school. I hope to go to France some day for more exposure to the culture, and the language.
